For some, laundry day may be the most dreaded chore but it doesn’t have to be with these simplified tips and tricks to make it more bearable.
No one loves laundry day but, statistics show that people spend an average of an hour and a half per day doing laundry.
The average family does eight loads of laundry each week, which is over 400 loads per year. With a single load taking an average of 3 hours from start to finish that’s 50 days a year doing laundry.
Using some easy laundry tips and tricks can make the chore less of a bore and give you more time for other things. Check these out.
Spread the Work Throughout the Week
Instead of choosing a family wash day and spending hours doing all the laundry at one time, consider doing one load per day so it doesn’t feel like such a big job. For example, do all of the sheets on Monday, the darks on Tuesdays, towels on Wednesdays and so forth.
This way it’s all done by the weekend, but it doesn’t take hours at a time. Incorporate your laundry tasks into an overall plan for all household chores and you’ll save time on cleaning activities.
Presort into Baskets
Tired of the heap of clothes that lie on your laundry room floor? Try using a couple of baskets and having your family place lights in one, darks in another, and undergarments and socks in a third.
This cuts down a lot of time on sorting and helps teach everyone what can be washed with what.
Use a Reward System on Laundry Day
Doing laundry isn’t a fun task, but it doesn’t have to be terrible either.
Many people say that folding and putting laundry away is the worst part. If that’s how you feel, make folding time the only time you can watch your favorite TV show. You only get to listen to the new podcast episode while putting away laundry as well.
Giving yourself a reward helps get it done.
Don’t Do Huge Loads
You might think that washing more at once will cut down on the time you spend on laundry. But, stuffing too much in the washer keeps it from getting everything clean and you may find yourself rewashing some of it.
Working with smaller loads helps your washer and dryer maintain efficiency. Make sure you clean the lint trap in the dryer after every load. Also use tricks to keep your washing machine fresh, such as using apple cider vinegar. This avoids doing the work twice.
Get Everyone in on It
There’s no rule that says you have to do all the laundry.
Teach your kids how it works and pretty soon you can allocate some of the loads to them. Some families find that letting each person wash their own clothes is helpful in making sure it all gets done.
A “how to do laundry” chart posted near the washer provides helpful reminders for anyone who is still learning. No more wash day laundry left behind!
