You tried to take on your dirty windows with a spray bottle and a roll of paper towels. Now, all you have to show for your efforts is a sore arm and a streaky window covered in little white fibers.
So, now what?
Well, if you cleaned your window the proper way the first time around, you wouldn’t be stuck recleaning until you can see through your windows again.
Ready to learn how to clean your windows the right way?
Here’s everything you need to know about how to clean windows like a pro.
Start with the Right Tools
First things first, before you start any task, you need to make sure you have the right tools to get the job done. And, when it comes to washing windows, paper towels just aren’t going to cut it.
While the type of solution you use depends on your windows and preferences, there are two tools you should never go without; a scrubber, and a squeegee.
You should also have a bucket of cleaning solution, a dust rag, a microfiber cloth, and a step-ladder, to help you get to all the hard-to-reach places.
Dust It Off
Before you start properly cleaning your window, take a few moments to clear away any dust, debris, or cobwebs that may have built up using your dust rag.
Use Some Elbow Grease
Now that your window is clear of dust, it’s time to start scrubbing.
Before dipping your scrubber in your cleaning fluid, make sure to check it for debris or anything else that could wind up damaging your windows.
While scrubbing your windows, make sure you take the time to go along the edges and get into the corners to get rid of any extra dirt or dust. Use a little more pressure to loosen up any stuck-on messes.
Squeegee the Right Way
Once you’ve thoroughly scrubbed your window, it’s time to squeegee the suds away. And, unless you want to wind up with a bunch of leftover streaks and drips, you’ll need to make sure you squeegee the right way.
Use the corner of your squeegee to clear a small vertical strip at the edge of your window — This will be your starting strip.
Then, clear a full-length horizontal strip from your starting strip to the opposite side across the top of your window. Move down the rest of the surface, holding your squeegee at a slight angle.
Remember to leave some overlap between your strokes and to wipe down your squeegee each time.
Dry the Drips
No matter how carefully you squeegee your window, you’re sure to wind up with a few extra drips here and there.
Use a small section your microfiber cloth to go over any leftover wet-spots.
Be sure to switch to a new, clean section of your cloth between sections.
